Seaman Paper Celebrates Earth Day at Allendale Woods
One of the most impactful holidays observed in the United States and around the world, Earth Day first took place on April 22, 1970. During the 1960s, events such as Cleveland’s Cuyahoga River Fire and the publishing of Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring” planted the seeds for public environmental awareness. More than 50 years later, we continue to celebrate this holiday in a time when sustainability is more important than ever.
Comprising 14 adults and one infant, the Seaman Paper team put on their working shoes, rolled up their sleeves, and got dirty for the afternoon. The goal was to restore the VFW Parkway woodland edge after years of damage from decades-old roadway work and dumping. Planting three species of attractive flowering understory trees, including Flowering Dogwood, Witch Hazel, and Serviceberry, the team helped increase native plant biodiversity and enhance forest structure by adding to the most compromised forest layer and providing food and shelter to wildlife.
This planting is one of many actions that Seaman Paper plans as part of our commitment to conserving and enhancing the local landscape to ensure a long-term balance between people and nature.
According to One Tree Planted founder Matt Hill, trees provide the following environmental benefits:
- Home to 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity
- Clean the air by absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere
- Act as filters during heavy rain, absorbing water, cleaning it, and releasing it gradually
- Reduce the rate of soil erosion when it rains
- Create social impact for employment and life, as 1.6 billion people on this planet are somehow connected to forests for their livelihood
This Earth Day celebration represents one of many examples of sustainability being ingrained into Seaman Paper’s culture. In fact, we are committed to emphasizing this consciousness through key initiatives in several different areas, such as environmental, energy, fiber use, recycling, water and safety.
